Dear all,

this newsflash might be of interest to some of you:

It is good to see the British government putting its cards on the table,
and publicly recognise the vital importance of converging on open
standards that are vendor neutral for its operations.

The announcement to adopt Open Document Format within the UK government
shows that UK minister for the Cabinet Office Francis Maude and his team
know what they are talking about when it comes to improving real-world
interoperability in collaboration across applications and devices.

To quote Maude: "Government will begin using open formats that will
ensure that citizens and people working in government can use the
applications that best meet their needs when they are viewing or working
on documents together."

Certainly this new policy is in line with the Cabinet Office strategic
goal to make better and more effective and secure use of ICT. As OpenDoc
Society we of course welcome this decision by the UK Government, and we
look forward to working with the UK government on improving
interoperability, security and sustainability of public sector
information through open standards.

Kind regards,
on behalf of the board of OpenDoc Society
Michiel Leenaars
